Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor

Adverse publicity surrounds the Wales-England match when an English player is bitten by a Welsh forward. Wales win 14-3 watched by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.Taylor wore a Wales-inspired red bowler and the couple joined the thousands of voices singing a rousing Cwm Rhondda. But they were nearly trampled by the crowds celebrating the home side’s win as they made their way back to their hotel. Burton’s friend Graham Jenkins dubbed it “one of the worst experiences of a lack of crowd control that I have ever known.”

“The crowd just wouldn’t let us get out,” he said. They were eventually saved by the Swansea-born Wales full-back Haydn Mainwaring, who cleared a path for them into the hotel kitchen.
